Interview Mom - Primary Source

Me: Mom! Can I ask you few question about your marriage?
Mom: Oh! Sure! What do you want to know about?
Me: Okay,,, first, how and when did you first met my dad?
Mom: Uhm.. it was about sixteen years ago. Actually, 1996, June 19th. My friend and his friend introduced us and we got to know each other.
Me: Than when did you get married??
Mom: On 1997, January 30th.
Me: Wow, you didn't even go on a date with my dad for a year! You got married after only half a year you first met him.
Mom: Yes, that's what happened. Your dad was kept following me and bothering me.
Me: Okay,,,,,So where did you go for honeymoon?
Mom: We went to Bali. It was great; we enjoyed a lot.
Me: Are there any fun episodes happened at Bali?
Mom: Um.. There is one! On the second day, we went out to the beach to play. When we went under the water, the waves started to rise quite high. I started to get little scared. So I told your dad to go back to our hotel room. However, I think your dad enjoyed the waves and spending time at the beach. He didn't come out. I came out of the water and waited for your dad to come out on the seashore. After fewminutes, I saw your dad coming out of the ocean half dead. I asked him why and his word made me laugh. He said that the waves were too high, and he almost died. He was yelling my name in strengthbecause he thought he would die right after his marriage. At the end, we end up with never going back to the ocean to play until the last day of the honeymoon.
Me: Really??? This is hilarious! Oh, that's why my dad is scared of water.
Mom: Yes, that's probably the main reason why he has a trauma of water. Do you have more things to ask?
Me: No!! This is enough! Thank you for answering all my questions!

Interview Uncle - Secondary Source

Me: Uncle! Do you have time to help me answer few questions about my mom and dad's marriage.
Uncle: Sure!! About my sister? What do you want to know?
Me: Do you know how my mom acted after she first met my dad?
Uncle: Oh, of course! She was complaining the whole week that she didn't want to go on a date again with him.
Me: But? What happened?
Uncle: She started to change after one month she went on a date with him. Whenever she came back from a date, she would always say that he is such a enjoyable person, and he is really careful towards her. From then she started to open her heart to him.
Me: Ohh, that's what happened. I heard that they got married only after half a year, when she said to you, grandpa, and grandma, what were their reactions?
Uncle: It wasn't that bad. Your grandma first told your mom to bring him and have a dinner together. After two weeks your father visited our house and acted really mature and with manner. After, both your mom's and dad's parents agreed and they married.
Me: Okay! This helped me a lot thank you!
Uncle: No problem!

Roles of Historian

  • Detective: Roles that detectives have is to find evidence proving any changes in history occurred. While I was being a detective, I gathered sources; evidence that proves that my parents are married under the law. There are two necessary parts that are used for sorting out the sources. Primary source is the direct evidence from the actual time of the event, which is the best way to prove changes from history. For my project, my primary sources can be pictures, wedding certification, and an interview from my mother. Secondary source can help prove changes as well, however, for my topic it was hard to find a written form of a secondary source. Instead, I decided to interview my uncle, who has witnessed my parents' love story from the beginning.

  • Interpreter: When I was being an interpreter, I decided to simply prove and gather the information that shows that my parents are married. Since my topic is about my parents wedding, the only thing that I could prove was rather my parents are married under the law or about my birth. However, I wanted to clarify all two things, I decided to get my main point as wedding and take my birth as one simple point at the timeline.

  • Judge: While gathering sources, or interviews, there can be different stories from different people's perspective. In order to make a complete judgement about what happen at what exact time, historians should be able to use their skill of judge. For instance, when I was interviewing my mom, I got some information that was incorrect with what my uncle said. This means that even though people are at the same situation, what they think about can be all different.

  • Philosopher: Even though one certain event is covered with primary and secondary sources and evidences, there should be meaning attached to it. While I was working on this project, it led me to think about why I should care about this event. I chose this event as the turning point in our family because as the title, this is the origin of Choi and Lee's family. When my parents got married, every thing started. New history was recorded. When I was born even big history was written down. These are few reasons why it is a significant event for me and my family.

Conclusion

All these steps led me to think more about our family and what historians have to do. Especially, the four stages of roles of historian really made me think deep inside about all the historian facts that I knew before. It made me to think about all the evidence of any historical fact to the roles of historian. Also, while concentrating on all these works, it made me to realize the importance of our family and how happy I am to be a part of this family.
